PRETTY GREEN LIVE #010: BROOKE COMBE - WATCH THE FILM

Pretty Green were delighted to host Brooke Combe performing in-store exclusively at Pretty Green, 19 King street, Manchester, on the 8th December 2021.

21-year old Edinburgh based artist Brooke Combe began her journey towards stardom with a series of viral covers posted to Twitter and TikTok, her repertoire spanning Marvin Gaye to Arctic Monkeys to Baccara’s ‘Yes Sir I Can Boogie’, the unofficial Euro 2020 anthem for the Scottish men’s football team.

Brooke has been a dedicated musician since she was just 5 years old. Growing up to a soundtrack (courtesy of her parents and grandparents) of ‘90s R'n’B and ‘60s Motown, she cut her baby teeth on a toy drum kit, shortly to be followed by saxophone, trombone, guitar, bass and piano. Her soaring voice, incredibly enough, was apparently the last piece of the puzzle; earlier this year, she told the NME that it didn’t come until her final year of secondary school.

Her ability to build new heights of heart and soul on already well loved music took the internet by a storm, and caught Brooke the attention of some serious players. For her first pair of singles, ‘Are You With Me?’ and ‘A-Game’, she was invited down to Liverpool’s famous Parr Street Studios to record with The Coral’s James Skelly and Chris Taylor, with the addition of Blossoms’ Chaz Skelly on bass to really give you an idea of the calibre of musician wanting to perform alongside her.

At the end of October, Brooke followed up with her latest single ‘Impress You’, a powerful condemnation of the unrealistic beauty standards that women are expected to conform to. “If I dress in heels just once / maybe I can get their love” she sings, accompanied by a sea of harmonies that crash against a thick rock ‘n’ roll bassline and 70s fingersnap drums. She then capped everything off in November by signing to Island Records and winning Female Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Scottish Music Awards - not a bad 2021 for Brooke, then.

Brooke's blazing her own trail with a swagger and confidence that we at Pretty Green have a huge admiration and respect for. "I'm raring to go me, I'm absolutely ready for it" Brooke told our host Clint Boon during her interview at the Pretty Green Manchester store.

Despite having already achieved more than many could ever dream of, it’s not hard to see how Brooke Combe will continue her meteoric rise into 2022. She’s already scheduled to support Courteeners and Miles Kane this winter through to next spring, and she’s not been too quiet about her ambitions either, telling the NME: “I dream big, let’s just say that.”
